Launch of a new children’s book about the Forest’s history

A new children’s book “The Story of the Forest” was launched at St Johns Church of England Academy, Coleford in July 2021. The Forest of Dean Local History Society has been working with Foresters’ Forest and Andy Seed, an award-winning local children’s author, to create the book with illustrations by Ursula Hurst. Revealing the rich history and heritage of the Forest of Dean, this delightful book is an informative and entertaining family read which adults will enjoy too.

Andy Seed says: “I was delighted to be asked to write this book. The Forest’s history is so rich, colourful and significant, and it has been a pleasure – as well as a challenge – to guide children through the story of its past from the earliest times to the present day. A huge number of local people contributed to the project, and it’s very exciting to be able to use so many wonderful old photographs as well as specially commissioned maps and illustrations. I am particularly pleased that Forest schools and libraries are being given free copies of the book”.

Mary Sullivan, Chair of Forest of Dean Local History Society says: “For many years I have had the ambition to produce material that would inspire local children to be interested in their own community’s history. The Society being a partner in Foresters’ Forest has now achieved this goal. I am delighted we have this beautiful book to offer children and families”

Sue Middleton, Foresters’ Forest Programme Manager adds: “This beautiful book is part of our aim to help children learn why our forest is so special, hopefully inspiring them (and their families) to go out and explore our giant learning resource which is all around them”

This book has been funded by the Foresters’ Forest, National Lottery Heritage funded landscape partnership programme. Free copies will be provided to schools and libraries in the Forest of Dean. Copies will also be available for sale for £8 from local outlets such as the Dean Heritage Centre, Taurus Crafts and Choice Cards in Lydney.
